Stylish stairways using wood wall paneling in any home…

We don’t all get to live in a house where an architect has put thought and style into the stairway, where the staircase is a thing of beauty, and where form precedes function.

Like so many of us who live in a house with a ‘more mainstream’ staircase, we see the stairs as a purely functional means of getting upstairs and down.

There are ways to make your staircase more beautiful, and with a bit of creativity and some simple styling, your stairs can rival the best architectural design, both in terms of style and visual appeal!

Usually centrally located in a home and frequently cited very close to, if not directly by the front door, the staircase is one of the most ‘seen’ areas in your home by both visitors and the occupants alike!

Like all great design, it’s about so much more than the color you choose on the walls…

Your hallway is the first impression guests have of your home, so make sure it reflects your style. Is your home traditional, contemporary or a little bit of both? Do you prefer clean lines or are you more of a maximalist? Once you’ve decided on your style, you can start to think about the interior design details.

Let’s begin at the bottom!

In terms of flooring, there are so many more options than there ever used to be.

If you have wooden stairs, why not use a stair runner? It’s a great way to add some personality and color to brighten up the space. But, if you're after a more luxurious feel, consider using a plush carpet on your staircase. This will instantly make the space feel cozier and more inviting, but be sure to choose a durable carpet that can withstand high traffic.

For a really unique look, consider using decorative tiles on your stairs? With so many different types and styles available, tiles can also be a great way to add some personality and make a statement.

Wallcovering ideas…

It’s important to choose a wallcovering surface that’s durable.

Wallpaper definitely isn’t ideal in a hallway as it’s liable to get damaged quickly, and whilst paint can be easily wiped over and touched up, do you really want to be getting out a paintbrush every couple of months?

Less well known, wooden wall paneling is one of the most ‘forgiving’ surfaces that you can choose for a wall’s surface! Not only does it withstand knocks and scuffs, but some finishes with a more rustic appearance ‘age better’ with the odd surface scratch or two, making them an ideal choice in a busy thoroughfare.

Consider the continuity of the interior design!

Does your stairway lead directly off a hallway? If so, you may want continuity of decoration, both in terms of the walls and also the floor treatment. If your stairway is open to another part of the house, think about using a contrasting color or pattern on the stairs that will draw the eye up, and in much the same way, clever lighting can be used to highlight the stairs and surrounding areas.

Lighting can transform a room…

Lighting doesn’t have to be a ceiling fitting or just wall lights. Consider adding accent spotlighting, recessed into the wall to illuminate each and every step? The clever use of lighting can be the difference between a functional room and a stunning space.

Whether you want to make a grand statement or simply add some personality, be sure to make a good first impression and style your stairs!
